I went looking for other blogs that identify themselves as originating from Nebraska. Right away I found "Lisa's Blog". Her blog is nice looking and the content is interesting. Her vocabulary building entries caught my eye. This is something I do myself. With my old small-print OED, and a collection of specialized dictionaries, I try to add a word or two now and then.
I'm not obsessive or even regular about it. When a new word pops up in reading, conversation, or on the airwaves, I make an effort to look it up. And dictionaries, I can't get enough of them! I look for them at library sales. Not regular dictionaries, but things like medical dictionaries, legal dictionaries, and technical dictionaries are the ones I look for. Etiology and linguistic analysis are favorite pastimes for me. Syntax and usage are not far behind. Wish I had the time to make a blog with nifty daily features like Lisa's.

Hey that's cool. I'm a word maniac myself. My favorite is digging into the IndoEuropean roots. You may be conservative but at least you do not cultivate ignorance.
ReplyDeleteDid I say I was a conservative, Robert? I like to think of myself as a free man. Everyone else either ingnores me, (which is fine), helps me enjoy my freedom (even better), or threatens my freedom. I'm OK with whatever anyone in the first two categories wants to do. I'm 'anti' the specific acts, goals, ideals and associations that those of the third category, insofar as they would limit my freedom. Anything else even these folks do is OK by me. I guess I'm mostly anti-communist these days.

*of* those of the third category, insofar as they would limit my freedom.
