A fond remembrance of William F. Buckley

1968 - Chicago
It was, for me, the high point of the 1968 Democrat convention in Chicago. Greasy-looking Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley were debating on live TV. Gore was calling Bill names. I was watching when Buckley said:
Now listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I’ll sock you in your goddamn face and you’ll stay plastered.
At the time I already knew Gore Vidal was a communist pervert. It was good to hear him called out. Bill Buckley wasn't just a wizard of the English language and a true intellect, he was a Mensch. Too bad he's dead.

One of my ex-brother-in-laws, the one that went to prison rather than be drafted, has an 8X10 glossy photo of him getting tossed into a van by the Chicago cops at about the same time. The whole world was watching. That was his convention high point.
